TOBE HOOPER

Tobe Hooper was born in Austin, Texas, on January 25th, 1943, and he left us last August, 2017. An indisputable figure of the horror genre since he revolutionized it when he burst onto the scene with such an overwhelming title as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), his second feature film after the experimental Eggshells (1969). His irregular career continued with such interesting titles as the TV movie Salem’s Lot (1979) based on Stephen King’s novel, The Funhouse (1981) and, without any doubt, his biggest commercial success Poltergeist (1982) written and produced by Steven Spielberg. After signing three titles for the ineffable Cannon: Lifeforce (1985), Invaders of Mars (1986), remake of William Cameron’s classic Menzies and the sequel to his “massacre” The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), Hooper alternated works in TV series (The Equalizer, Freddie’s Nightmares, Dark Skies, Taken) with increasingly forgettable films. In recent years he was recovered by Mick Garris for his series of horror anthologies Master of Horror along with some of his generation colleagues such as Don Coscarelli, Joe Dante or John Landis.
