A. EDWARD SUTHERLAND

Actor and film director born in London in 1895. He directed more than 50 movies between 1925 and 1956 working for Paramount, Universal and RKO. He hit his stride in the 1930s and 1940s with a string of well-received comedies starring Laurel & Hardy and W.C. Fields. In 1940, he directed One Night in the Tropics, which was the film debut of Abbott and Costello. Other notable films include Too Much Harmony (1933), Palmy Days (1935), The Flying Deuces (1939), The Navy Comes Through (1942), Dixie (1943), and Follow the Boys (1944). He died in Palm Springs in 1973.
